Much like Goldilocks' perfect bowl of porridge, the Explorer's mid-level engine -- a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder -- offers that "just right" mix of fun and frugality.

Available as an option with the Base and XLT models, this four-cylinder joins with a six-speed automatic gearbox to produce a peppy 280 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. It's served up standard with front-wheel drive, though all-wheel drive is optional.

Interestingly, this engine is also the Explorer's most economical offering. When had with front-wheel drive, for instance, it's expected to return 22 mpg combined (19 city/28 highway).
