2018 Ford Explorer Review

With its family wagon image and rugged capability, the 2018 Ford Explorer gracefully aged into a modern SUV with cutting-edge technology and all-around versatility. Depending on how it's configured, the Explorer can deliver power, style, space, or luxury that puts it ahead of its class.

Drivers in Raytown, Lee's Summit, or Blue Springs can learn more about the unique features and capabilities of the 2018 Ford Explorer with our in-depth model review.

The Ford Explorer comes standard with a 3.5L V6 that produces 290 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque. And this engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The mid-level engine option is a 2.3L turbo I-4 that produces 280 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. With this engine, the Explorer is rated to tow up to 3,000 pounds. It's also available in all-wheel drive.

The top engine option is a twin-turbo 3.5L V6, which produces 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. The trims equipped with this engine (Sport and Platinum) are only available in all-wheel drive and can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

While the Sport trim offers more precise steering, thick stabilizer bars, and a firm suspension, all trim levels have a smooth ride, responsive steering, and body control that make the Explorer a capable around-town vehicle.

For off-road and inclement weather, the Explorer has a multi-traction system that alternates between Normal, Mud, Sand, Snow, and Rut modes to adjust the brakes and power accordingly. In a rugged environment or dangerous road conditions, this is a welcome addition that takes the pressure off the driver.

Passenger Comfort & Cargo Space

The 3-row Explorer can seat seven people comfortably, with ample headroom and legroom throughout its cabin. The soft cushions and bolstering are supportive and comfortable for long trips, and optional comfort upgrades include power-adjustability and heated or ventilated seats.

In the second row, the Explorer offers a standard bench seat for three passengers, as well as an optional captain's chair upgrade for two passengers. The second row flips and folds out of the way for more cargo or passenger space, as well, but the third row is spacious enough for adults on its own.

With both rows folded, the cargo bay opens up to 81 cubic feet of flat, unobstructed space, lined with durable carpeting. With all seats upright, there's still 21 cubic feet of storage. Some Explorer trims also offer power-folding seats and a roof rack for additional convenience and cargo options.
